Since our establishment we help customers in the pharma industry and soon became experts also for problems in other industries handling sensitive goods. Each industry has its own challenges and regulatory requirements but our domain expertise combined with our cross-industry and systemic mindset allow us to find truly innovative solutions leveraging the full ecosystem experience.
Industries

Pharmaceuticals
As temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products travel to the patient, external conditions, specifically temperatures, can reduce their efficacy and quality. Temperature-controlled packaging can maintain the desired temperature ranges. However, in order to fulfil Good Distribution Practice (GDP), World Health Organization (WHO) standards and other regulatory requirements, a monitoring solution is required.
How do our solutions fit?
Our precision monitoring solutions are developed according to pharma standards (GAMP5) and follow GxP requirements.
Our solutions allow for customized measurement profiles. With the inclusion of product stability criteria and article-level monitoring, we will take the next step in pharmaceutical condition monitoring.

Medical Devices
Medical devices, which range from diagnostic instruments to implants, are subject to regulatory requirements to ensure quality from production to the end user. In the EU, the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) states that quality control is required on a single unit level. During a shipment, medical devices are particularly prone to damage from humidity, shock and tilt due to incorrect handling or insufficient protective packaging.
How do our solutions fit?
Based on your needs, we can adapt our monitoring solutions to be able to detect shock, tilt, freefall or other acceleration related events and easily link it to our cloud-based dashboard. Also, our solution is ideal to monitor the quality of goods for closed-loop shipments, for example with hospitals shipping and returning bone cement to be placed back on the market.
Are you unsure how the MDR will impact your supply chain due to a lack of visiblity into your current processes? Use MODsense to create decisive facts fast and uncomplicated in an temporary project.

Perishable Foods and Beverages
According to a UN study, approximately a third of the food produced for human consumption, amounting to around 1.3b tons, is wasted due to supply chain issues, in particular deviations from the required environmental conditions during transit. In addition, functional food, which is often categorized neither as a drug nor a dietary supplement, can be subject to unique quality control and reporting requirements.
How do our solutions fit?
We have both temperature and humidity sensing capabilities and our seamless monitoring approach supports you in keeping your cold chain under control until the produce reaches its destination. In addition, our user friendly and simple mobile app as well as our compact and robust data loggers are ideal for the use in home delivery services.

Chemicals & Construction Material
In construction, malleable materials, such as thermoset polymer foams, are often used due to their unique ability to change their physical properties depending on temperature, light or pressure. These products are often used for sealing or insulation purposes. This requires controlling and monitoring the environmental conditions during transport in order to ensure that the physical properties remain within the quality limits determined by the product’s intended use.
How do our solutions fit?
Our flexible monitoring solutions allow you to measure the conditions of each individual reactive chemical component separately with its own condition profile, link digitally to a single shipment ID, as well as provide alarm settings on component level, thus greatly reducing the manual management overhead.

Warehouse to Warehouse Distribution
Shipping in bulk from production sites to regional distribution hubs typically involves a variety of transportation means, mainly air freight but with a growing trend also sea freight, and this comes with its own challenges. On the one hand, distributing high value shipments in bulk needs to be protected, and on the other hand, longer shipment durations usually involve multiple 3rd parties and areas with little control over environmental conditions, for example foreign airports or harbours.
How do our solutions fit?
We offer solutions that can transfer data autonomously at defined intervals (“real-time”) for transport segments with higher risk and less control as well as stationary gateways for low risk distribution points, where data is autonomously read out from devices in its vicinity. This risk-based approach allows you to meet monitoring requirements while keeping costs at a minimum. To ensure interoperability, we have several interface options to connect with your logistic service providers or integrate into control tower applications.

National, Last Mile Distribution
Currently somewhat of a blind-spot, regulatory scrutiny is increasingly focusing on monitoring quality during transport in the final stages of goods distribution, also referred to as the “Last Mile”. Coping with delivery density, ad-hoc changes in routing, unpredictability during transit, diversity of consumer needs and cost sensitivity as well as varying carrier capabilities to control transport quality are just some of the challenges which need to be addressed.
How do our solutions fit?
Our award-winning and first temperature monitoring solution MODsense was designed with digitalizing the Last Mile in mind, providing a simple way of keeping goods safe while still being cost effective. It can be used stand-alone or integrated into a carrier’s processes. Scalable, robust and easy to use, MODsense is the ideal way to prevent damaged goods crossing your customer’s doorstep.

Clinical Trials
Over the last few years, clinical trials have reached a global level, where kits are sent over large distances until they reach the participating patients. As clinical trials are both costly and time-sensitive, monitoring and ensuring the quality of the transported goods on a kit level is crucial. Especially with the growing trend of having patients administer treatments independently at home, patients now need to be involved in conducting quality checks prior to consumption.
How do our solutions fit?
Our data loggers are robust and compact enough to fit into most kits, generating ongoing measurement data which, in comparison with pure indicators, provide valuable insights for root-cause analysis. Our solution is designed to be used by consumers, so ongoing quality checks can be performed at the patient’s home during the treatment with quality managers having instant access to the same information remotely.

Personalized Medicine
The personalized medicine market size is expected to double in the next 5 years reaching USD 3.2 trillion in 2025. Its impact on manufacturing processes and logistics is huge – companies will need to shift from large to small batch production, the high value of individual treatments will drive the need for more visibility over the entire supply chain, goods sensitivity to environmental conditions will increase, retrieving bio samples from patients will add a new stage to the logistics process and time-to-patient will need to decrease significantly.
How do our solutions fit?
Irrespective of what IoT sensing devices are used in the different distribution stages, the measurement data and related deviation events are managed centrally on an article-level to create a consistent trail from finished goods to the patient. With relevant events being documented on the blockchain, such as quality releases, deviations or custodian handovers, we create a trusted layer for information sharing to enable process automation with Smart Contracts, hence reducing time-to-patient to a minimum.

The Situation
Pharma, food and other industries need secure and easy-to-handle solutions for temperature monitoring of their products throughout the whole supply chain.
The Challenge
Quality authorities should monitor the product quality up until delivery without adding unnecessary manual steps and training for commissioning, the logistic partner or the customer. For the last mile specifically, a seamless process allowing to reliably monitor high quantities, low value shipments with minimal involvement of the recipient, is key.

The Solution
- The quality person sets temperature parameters in the dashboard.
- The commissioner starts the logger with the desktop app, scans the shipment barcode and packs the shipment.
- The logistics partner transports the shipment and scans the barcode when delivering package with the mobile app – this will readout the logger.
- The quality person receives the logger data in the dashboard.
- The customer receives their product with a peace of mind.
The Achievement
The highly adaptable MODsense ecosystem delivers an optimal solution to measure the temperature inside packages. By being monitored along the entire transportation route, sensitive goods travel even more securely – a solution which mainly targets the senders of pharmaceutical products. However, it is also interesting for the food industry and other industries distributing sensitive goods. In addition, the temperature inside the package is being measured and recorded, which allows for the verification of GDP-conformity. Moreover, the temperature monitoring can be used with standard packaging, which results in the service being appealing for a vast number of shipments.

"To stay ahead of the game, Swiss Post partners with start-ups – including Modum. Based on the principle that everyone does what they are good at, our thermo-monitoring solution was developed from this close cooperation. And this to the great benefit of our customers. Thank you Modum!"
